Sustainability on the road: Coca‑Cola HBC Switzerland drives on biogas

Coca‑Cola HBC Switzerland starts to operate the country's largest biogas vehicle fleet. By changing its vehicle fleet to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), the company achieves once more a significant reduction of its carbon footprint.

Fleet Manager Roberto de Miguel and Sustainability Officer Patrick Wittweiler appeared from October 21-23 at the AMAG Fleet Event to present Coca‑Cola HBC as a positive role model for this change. They proudly explained why the company had decided to switch over to biogas.

Coca‑Cola HBC Switzerland has been committed to sustainable business for years. In September, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2019 (DJSI) awarded the company first place as Europe's most sustainable beverage company. It now goes one step farther and will start to operate by end of November 180 CNG vehicles – currently the largest biogas fleet in Switzerland. A number of media have already reported on this:

After two months in operation, the feedback about the new vehicles and the alternative drive technology is entirely positive. For the first 1000 km, the vehicles are driven 100 percent on biogas and thus practically climate-neutral. When running on fossil natural gas, a CNG vehicle emits 15 percent less CO₂ than a diesel vehicle.

The result is impressive: thanks to biogas power, Coca‑Cola HBC saves each year about 250 tons of CO₂ – the amount saved can be pictured as a 250 kilometer freight train filled with CO₂.
