Cheers – Coca-Cola HBC is the most sustainable beverages company in the world

Coca-Cola HBC has been designated the most sustainable beverages company in the world, coming in the top three companies in the beverages industry worldwide for the twelfth year in a row.

On 9 December 2022 S&P Global published the new Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), one of the most renowned sustainability benchmarks there is.  The DJSI takes into account the economic criteria and also the environmental and social actions of companies worldwide. In these areas Coca-Cola HBC distinguished itself, scoring 93 out of a maximum possible 100 points.

Sustainable management is one of Coca-Cola HBC’s most important strategic goals and is deeply rooted in our company's values. Zoran Bogdanovic, CEO of Coca-Cola HBC, commented: “This award from the DJSI shows that we are on the right track. Last year we set ourselves as a group the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and I am firmly convinced that we will achieve this goal”.

How we contributed to this sustainability success in Switzerland

Coca-Cola HBC in Switzerland has made a significant contribution to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index result.

The introduction of 100% rPET in 2022 was one of the most important steps in our progress towards a complete circular economy. This change saves around 3,300 tonnes of virgin PET, in other words new PET, every year. And in production itself, by implementing energy-saving measures we are becoming ever-more efficient. Temperature adjustments to the refillable glass bottle washing machine and alkaline baths and adjustments to the running time of the refrigeration machine are just some of the energy initiatives and measures that were successfully introduced by 2022. In May our water management was successfully put through its paces by hydrogeologists. In September we were certified by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard for the third time. We have also had successes in the field of distribution. Since November 2022 the first e-truck with Valser branding has been making the trip between the beverage warehouse in Rümlang and the retailers in the Greater Zurich area. The change of vehicles can save 63 tonnes of CO2 per year.

But it not just climate topics that play an important role at Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland; the social component of sustainability is something else we practise: this year around 40 Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland employees in Switzerland took part in actions such as the Clean Up Day, during which carelessly discarded rubbish in Brüttisellen and Vals was collected and disposed of through our commitment to tackling littering.
